Doubao’s Features and Capabilities: Full 2026 Overview

Doubao gives away things Western assistants charge for, and withdrew a feature most treat as a headline. The full capability picture — with app features kept separate from model announcements.

Doubao gives away things most Western assistants charge for, and it took a feature away that most of them treat as a headline. Both of those facts tell you more about what the product is than any list of capabilities would.

This is the full feature picture as of August 2026: what has actually shipped inside the app, what ByteDance has announced at a model level but not put in your hands, what is free, and what disappeared in July. We are careful about that distinction throughout, because a great deal of English coverage treats a Volcengine model launch as though it were a Doubao app update. It usually is not.

The core assistant

Doubao’s own site describes the product as an AI assistant for chat, Q&A, writing, translation and coding — the standard modern spread. What distinguishes it in practice is less the capability list than the engagement it produces: QuestMobile recorded 54.8 uses per user per month in the first quarter of 2026, against 41.7 for DeepSeek, with a quarterly average active rate of 33.5%. That is a tool people reach for several times a day rather than a novelty they try once.

Underneath it sits the Doubao-Seed-2.1 generation, released on 23 June 2026 in Pro and Turbo versions, with a 256K-token context window. Paid Doubao Pro subscribers unlock access to the 2.1 Pro model specifically. Our model guide maps the generations.

Image generation

Doubao’s in-app image generation runs on Seedream — 豆包·图像创作模型 — ByteDance’s image model family. Volcengine released Doubao-Seedream-4.5 on 3 December 2025 and made it available to individual users inside the Doubao app as well as on Jimeng (即梦), Volcano Ark and Volcengine’s experience centre.

A newer model exists but has not been confirmed in the consumer app. ByteDance announced Seedream 5.0 Pro on 23 June 2026 and opened its API on 8 July 2026, with interactive pixel-level editing, dense information graphics with accurate text layout, photorealistic material and lighting, and native text rendering in more than ten languages. Those announcements frame it as an enterprise and developer API. Neither states that it has shipped inside the Doubao app, so we do not claim it has. More detail here.

Doubao and Jimeng are not the same product

ByteDance runs Jimeng (即梦) as a separate AI image and video creation platform. Volcengine’s Seedream 4.5 announcement listed the Doubao app and Jimeng as two parallel consumer entry points for the same underlying model. If you read about a ByteDance image capability and cannot find it in Doubao, Jimeng is often where it lives.

Video generation — the unusual one

This is where Doubao does something genuinely uncommon for a free consumer product.

ByteDance integrated Seedance 2.0 across the Doubao app, desktop client and web version on 12 February 2026. Users generate 5-second or 10-second clips with natively synchronised audio — 原声音画同步 — rather than silent video with sound bolted on afterwards. Doubao’s own home page advertises Seedance 2.0 as fully integrated and free to use after logging in.

There is one documented constraint from the rollout: users could not upload photographs of real people as a subject reference, though they could create a personal video avatar (视频分身) after real-person identity verification. That is a sensible guard against deepfake misuse and it also reflects Chinese labelling rules, which since September 2025 have required both a visible marker on generated content and an implicit marker embedded in file metadata, each surviving download or export.

A newer video model, Seedance 2.5, was released at Volcengine’s June 2026 conference. As with Seedream 5.0 Pro, that is a model-platform release; we have no confirmation it has reached the consumer app.

Voice and live video conversation

Doubao added a real-time interactive video call function on 23 May 2025, letting the assistant see through the phone camera. ByteDance’s own examples were pleasingly concrete: acting as a docent during a museum tour, a gardening tutor when observing plants, a recipe master while shopping for ingredients, or an analyst when studying charts and graphs.

On 6 August 2026 that feature was rebuilt on SeedRealtime, ByteDance’s native audio-video full-duplex model, which reasons jointly over audio, video and text within one temporal framework so the assistant can decide when to listen, when to respond and when to stay silent. The upgrade rolled out to the whole Doubao app and was free for all users.

Turn-taking is the hard part of voice assistants and the reason most of them feel like walkie-talkies. A model that decides for itself when not to speak is a meaningful architectural choice rather than a spec-sheet line. More on voice mode here.

Documents, podcasts and the PC client

Doubao’s desktop client does things the phone app does not. The most distinctive is an AI podcast feature, rolled out on 17 June 2025, which turns an uploaded PDF or a pasted web link into a two-host conversational audio programme in one click. At the time of that rollout the equivalent in the phone app was still in limited testing.

ByteDance ships Windows and macOS builds — including a separate Intel Mac build — from doubao.com/download/desktop, along with official Chrome and Edge extensions branded 豆包插件 · 浏览器 AI 助手. Our desktop and web guide covers what differs between the clients.

Agents: the feature that went backwards

Doubao is the only major assistant we know of whose user-built agents were withdrawn rather than expanded.

On 15 July 2026 — the day China’s Interim Measures for the Administration of Anthropomorphic AI Interactive Services took effect — Doubao stopped allowing users to create custom agents (智能体) in the app, telling users that after 15 October 2026 agent-related data would be handled under the privacy policy. Alibaba’s Qwen showed an equivalent “agent service going offline” notice the same day. ByteDance pointed users to its separate Maobox (猫箱) app to create new agents.

The measures behind this require providers to indicate that users are interacting with an AI rather than a person, prompt them after two hours of continuous use, bar virtual-relative and virtual-companion services for minors, and require guardian consent for under-14s. A platform that lets anyone build a persona is hard to reconcile with rules of that shape.

What survives is ByteDance’s own agents — the English-tutor agent Owen, which had been used more than nine million times by May 2025, is the best-documented example. The full agent story is here.

Music and audio: read the fine print

Music generation exists in Doubao — we know because ByteDance’s minors notice explicitly lists AI music generation among the features automatically disabled for users in minors mode. What does not exist, as far as we can verify, is a separately branded consumer “Doubao Music” product of the kind English coverage sometimes implies.

On the research and platform side there is more. ByteDance published Seed-Music as a research paper in September 2024 (arXiv:2409.09214), covering controlled vocal music generation from multi-modal inputs — style descriptions, audio references, musical scores, voice prompts — plus post-production editing of lyrics and vocal melodies. And at its June 2026 conference Volcengine announced Seed-Audio 1.0, an end-to-end model generating up to two minutes of audio per call combining dialogue, emotion, music and ambient sound from a single prompt, with multi-speaker timbre consistency — released as an invite-only API beta on Ark.

So: a research framework that is publicly readable, a platform model that is invite-only, and an in-app capability whose existence we can confirm but whose branding we cannot. We go through the evidence in detail here.

What costs money

Doubao was entirely free for nearly three years. ByteDance launched Doubao Pro (豆包专业版) in mainland China on 24 June 2026 at CNY 68, 200 and 500 per month, with annual options and an announced student rate of CNY 38 for verified mainland university students.

Crucially, ByteDance stated at launch that everyday consumer functions stay free — search and Q&A, writing and image generation, and voice and video conversation — and that free users continue to receive new models and capability upgrades. Three weeks before the launch, responding to leaks, the company called reports that it was degrading free features to push memberships 完全不实, completely false.

What paying actually adds is an agent-driven office task mode (办公任务模式) on the PC client which, after explicit user authorisation for local-computer access, can drive local applications, the browser and files — organising material, processing documents, filling forms — and produce Feishu documents, spreadsheets and presentations, plus scheduled tasks and production-grade web app generation. The tiers otherwise differ by quota: standard carries at least five times the free allowance, enhanced four times standard, premium ten times standard. Full breakdown here.

Beyond the app

Two extensions of Doubao are worth knowing about because they change what “using Doubao” means.

  • Ola Friend — ByteDance’s Doubao-powered open-ear earbuds, launched 10 October 2024 at CNY 1,199, shipping from 17 October, weighing 6.6 grams per bud, woken by touch or by saying “豆包豆包”. In May 2025 they gained the ability to summon the Owen English tutor directly for real-time conversation. Sold in China only.
  • The Doubao Phone Assistant — a system-level agent that can operate the phone itself, launched on ZTE nubia hardware in December 2025 and continued in the nubia NaviX Ultra announced in July 2026. It is a different and far more privileged thing than the app, and it has had a bumpy reception. That story is here.

What the feature set tells you about the product

Line the capabilities up and a shape emerges that is different from a Western assistant’s.

Doubao leads with generation and conversation — images, video with synced audio, live camera calls, podcasts from documents. It leads far less with the things a platform-first product emphasises: developer extensibility, an agent marketplace, enterprise deployment. Those exist at ByteDance, but they live in Volcengine, which IDC ranked first in China’s enterprise model-as-a-service market with 49.5% share for 2025. The consumer app is the shop window; the cloud is the shop.

That division explains the pricing too. An app whose job is to make the platform credible can afford to give away video generation, because the video generation is advertising. It also explains why Doubao’s capabilities skew toward the visual: this is a company whose other products are short-form video, and whose research team ships image, video and audio models alongside the text ones.

It is worth holding that in mind when reading feature comparisons. Doubao is not a weaker ChatGPT with a language problem; it is a differently-shaped product built for a different market by a company with different incentives.

What we could not verify

  • We have not used most of these features. Full access requires an account registered with a mainland Chinese phone number. This article describes what ByteDance and Volcengine have documented and announced, not what we found by using the app daily. Anyone writing hands-on impressions of Doubao from outside China should be asked how they got in.
  • Model announcements are not app updates. Seedream 5.0 Pro and Seedance 2.5 were both announced in June 2026 as platform releases. We found no statement that either has shipped inside the consumer app, so we do not say it has.
  • In-app music generation is confirmed only indirectly — through the minors notice listing it among disabled features. We could not verify its branding, limits or model.
  • Free-tier limits are not published as numbers. ByteDance describes the paid tiers as multiples of the free allowance without saying what the free allowance is.

Frequently asked questions

What can Doubao do?

Chat, search-grounded answers, writing and summarising; image generation via ByteDance’s Seedream models; video generation via Seedance 2.0 with synchronised audio; real-time voice and video calls where it can see through your camera; document handling; and a PC feature that turns a PDF into a two-host podcast. Most of this is free.

Is Doubao’s video generation really free?

Doubao’s own home page advertises Seedance 2.0 as fully integrated and free to use after logging in, as of August 2026. ByteDance also confirmed at the Doubao Pro launch that image generation and voice and video conversation remain free. What it has not published is a numeric limit on the free allowance.

Can I build my own agent in Doubao?

Not any more. On 15 July 2026, the day China’s anthropomorphic-AI measures took effect, Doubao stopped allowing users to create custom agents in the app and pointed them to ByteDance’s separate Maobox product. Alibaba’s Qwen posted an equivalent notice the same day.

Does Doubao generate music?

The app has an AI music generation feature — ByteDance’s minors notice lists it among the capabilities automatically disabled in minors mode. Separately, ByteDance published Seed-Music as research in September 2024 and announced Seed-Audio 1.0 in June 2026, though that one launched as an invite-only API beta rather than an app feature.

What does Doubao Pro add?

Mainly quota — the standard tier carries at least five times the free allowance. The distinctive addition is a PC office task mode that, after you explicitly authorise local computer access, can drive applications, the browser and files and produce Feishu documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
